Antoine de Ras,

short bio

Antoine de Ras (FPPSA)* was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and is currently based in Johannesburg. His first foray into photography was as a photographic assistant in his uncles advertising studio before landing a job as a photojournalist at Media 24 – Rapport, City Press for seven years, and then joined The Star newspaper in 2007, (Independent Newspapers group) where he worked as a full time Senior photojournalist for ten years.
He has travelled and worked extensively on assignment for various local and international media including Associated Press, Reuters, European Photo Agency (EPA) and UNICEF. His work has also been published in some leading international publications including Time magazine, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.

Antoine is best known for his ability to capture the pathos and despair created by conflict, disaster and displacement in an attempt to give voice to the voiceless. In 2009 he was nominated for the prestigious ‘Bayeux Calvados’ award, for his coverage of the xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa – an assignment that won him Story of the Year in the annual Mondi Shanduka awards. In 2012 during the Arab Spring a single image taken shortly after Hosni Mubarak stepped down as Egyptian President, took third prize overall in the News Section ‘Arab Uprising’ category in the 69th Pictures of the Year International (POYi).
At the end of 2016 he left the print media to pursuit and open ‘The Richmond Studio café’ an Espresso bar & eatery themed on his first love, photography. He is currently active and available as a freelance photojournalist and commercial studio photographer.
